Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a quick and effective way to achieve a more attractive smile. Veneers are thin shells that are made of porcelain that slide over your front teeth's surface. Because the shells are custom-made to your teeth’s unique specifications, they can improve your teeth’s appearance in a natural looking way. The porcelain material is strong, durable, and stain-resistant.

Veneers can be used to treat a wide variety of cosmetic dental problems such as:

  • Stained and discolored teeth
  • Worn down teeth
  • Chipped or damaged teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Uneven or poorly shaped teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

Placing your veneers usually takes a few appointments. The first appointment is a consultation where you explain to the dentist what parts of your smile you would like to be improved. Your dentist will inspect your teeth to determine if veneers are appropriate for you. X-rays and teeth impressions may be taken to get a better look at your mouth.

If you are a suitable candidate, you’ll return to the office to have your teeth prepared for the veneers. The dentist will remove 1/2 a millimeter from the tooth’s surface to ensure the veneers are an optimal fit. Teeth impressions are created which will be sent to a dental lab to create your veneers. In a couple of weeks, your veneers will be made. During this time your teeth will be covered with temporary veneers to protect them.

Once your permanent veneers are ready, you’ll return to the office to have them bonded. The dentist will double check that the veneers are a proper fit and shade before placing them. Once he/she is satisfied, the veneers are bonded to the teeth with a cement resin. A special UV light is used to harden the cement and bond it to the veneers. Any excess cement is removed and veneers and bite are checked to ensure that they are an optimal fit.
